The Great Mosque is unusual among the mosques in West Africa in that place, which were built before it was not sacred, and there was no palace. Most of the other mosques were built on the sites of conical mud or stone structures, symbolizing the spirits of the ancestors. Some scholars of the Islamic architecture considered that these forms are then integrated into the architecture of mosques in Mali, as the Great Mosque is the most famous example. The walls of the Grand Mosque are built of sun-baked clay bricks, called Ferre clay mortar. Covered with plaster of clay, which gives a smooth sculpted look of the building.
